by What Makes Me Mad ~ February 27th, 2010. Filed under: Mad, Mad, Mad.
This is a fan favorite classic mad TV skit with bob newhart. it seems to me that there is some truth to it… I claim no rights to madtv or the material presented in it and no Copyright infringement is intended.
Whoever thinks this is how therapy should work doesn’t understand what it is like to be mentally ill, what it is like to be frustratingly unable to quit your own maladaptive behavior. The skit is funny because it is unrealistic and goes against our expectations.
The subtext would be that Bob Newhart played a therapist on tv.
lmfao. probably the best advice possible for most people’s problems/complaints. STOP IT. Take responsibility for your own life and stop blaming your parents, job, gov’t, etc. for your problems. Most people in therapy wouldn’t need therapy if they’d take responsibility for themselves and face themsleves self-honestly.
You must not have read some of the other comments. And the emphasis on ‘you’ and ‘therapy’ really helped; I never would have seen those words if you hadn’t capitalized them, db.
If people would just recognize that their thoughts are what influence their lives, then they would say “STOP IT” everytime they are thinking wrong or negative thoughts. Remember we have the power to change what we think. I believe this is the whole point of this video, but on a much exaggerated scale.

It’s called comedy. It’s a joke! And no one is suggesting that this is how therapy works in the real world. Perhaps YOU could benefit from THERAPY
