by What Makes Me Mad ~ February 5th, 2010. Filed under: Mad, Mad, Mad.
Here it is! The original Joe Cocker / mad Dogs and Englishmen clip of Cry Me A River. Rare as anything and curiously left off the mad Dogs vid & DVD. Sheer vocal power and great band!
What a fantastic tour
Like a lot of artists joe was ripped off and never made any money from this tour
Some promoters are evil
My older brother introduced me to Joe cocker about 1970 and did he ever wear out the vinyl on mad dogs and englishmen
I saw him in concert in melbourne Australia in 1972. he did two show a night so that people could see him perform as he was being deported in a few days cos they found marajuana on him. Great show , great time in my life
True, but since the sixties a substantial portion of our great singers have sounded like “some madman screaming into a microphone” for those who aren’t into them. From Dylan, Jagger, Plant, most punk, most metal, rap is too tough to scream but otherwise qualifies – chuck the “man” part, and add an equal number from Joplin to Faithfull to Bjork, y’know… they’re ALL insane, and it’s ALL acquired taste.
According to the web site that has lots of photos of the tour, that would be Gail Stainton, wife of organ player Chris. That slutty look was pretty popular in the day!!
i could be wrong but i think the female backup singer with the glasses/orange hair is the same woman from the santana woodstock performance…i think joe picked her up and was like ok baby you singing back up for me now…
Saw Leon on the Grammy Awards tonight. He sounded good. I’ve got tickets to see him live at the end of April. 40th anniversary of the first rehearsal of MD&E coming up in about six weeks.

Rita Coolidge (long straight dark hair) sang with D&B before MD&E, but I don’t think Donna Washburn (red/blond hair w/ glasses) ever did.

Why thank you bb I think she looks great gorgeous – key board guy was in the grease band with joe. I liked the fashion then for that very reason!
